Skövde is a medieval town in western Sweden on the main railway line between Gothenburg and Stockholm. It is known for its long industrial history and, more recently, a growing gaming industry. In the coming years, it will also become a local hub for green hydrogen.

A hydrogen plant is being planned for the Risatorp industrial area outside Skövde. It will start at 2 megawatts but can later be expanded up to 7 megawatts. The hydrogen will be produced with renewable electricity from wind and solar secured through long‑term contracts. It will first be used in a nearby metal industry that wants to replace fossil fuels in its high‑temperature heating process, and in a local hydrogen refuelling station for trucks and buses, with options for more industrial and municipal users as demand grows. Hydrogen from the plant will be delivered partly through a dedicated pipeline to the industrial off‑taker and partly by trailers from an on‑site filling station, while the oxygen by‑product from electrolysis can be used at the municipal wastewater treatment plant to reduce electricity use in aeration. By linking hydrogen production to local industries, refuelling and water systems, Skövde becomes a compact example of how a medium‑sized town can build a local hydrogen economy that supports both industry and everyday mobility.
